Eating Well in a Village: Markets, Seasons and the Local Bar
Rural food is seasonal, simple and often the best of the trip, provided you learn when the village eats and where it shops.
Learn the village timetable
Shops close for long lunches, kitchens close early or late depending on the country, and many places shut one day a week. Ask your host on the first evening.
Market day
A weekly market is where local producers sell directly. Arrive early for the best choice, bring cash and a bag, and buy what is abundant, because that is what is in season.
Cook with what the place gives you
- Local cheese, bread and vegetables make a dinner with no recipe needed.
- Ask the seller how they would cook it. People are proud of their produce.
- Farm eggs and fresh herbs turn a basic kitchen into a good one.
The bar is the village living room
In many rural areas the bar is where people meet, read the paper and watch the football. A coffee there in the morning is the easiest way to become a familiar face.
Food that travels
Before you leave, check what you are allowed to take home. Rules on carrying fresh food across borders differ, and some products are not permitted.
